Soโฆ what is money?
You use it every day. You can spend it, save it, or give it away. But what is it, really?
๐ค Is money the same as the paper or the coin?
Show answer
No. Money is not really the paper. Money is a tool we all agree to use, so we can exchange things easily.
A world with no money
Long ago there was no money. To get something, people had to exchange things directly. This is called barter.
๐ค Why is barter so hard?
Show answer
Both people must want what the other has โ at the same time. That almost never matches. You can walk around all day and get nothing.
Money makes exchange easy
Money is one thing that everyone accepts. So you don't need a perfect match anymore. You sell your apples for money, then buy the football with that money.
Why does a โฌ20 note have value?
A โฌ20 note is almost worthless paper. If you write "โฌ20" on your own paper, no shop will take it. So why does the real one work?
๐ค What gives the โฌ20 note its value?
Show answer
We all trust it. Everyone believes they can use it to buy things โ so it works. Value comes from trust, not from the paper.
Money looks different everywhere
Every country has its own currency: euro (โฌ), dollar ($), rupee, dirham, and many more. Notes come in different colours and pictures โ often a famous person from that country.
Some countries print money on special plastic (polymer) instead of paper, so it lasts longer and is harder to copy. Australia was one of the first to do this.
๐ค Why do banknotes have secret marks, like a watermark or a shiny line?
Show answer
To make them very hard to copy. If fake money were easy to make, people would stop trusting it โ and then it would lose its value.
Quick check
๐ค True or false: "Money has value because it is made of gold."
Show answer
False. Most money is paper or plastic. It has value because we trust and accept it together.
